Red Light Conversations: Potential vs. Present Character, Watch Patterns, Not Promises

In relationships, and in business, discernment means noticing what is consistently practiced, not just what is promised. As in a city garden, healthy growth depends on what gets tended over time.
So what I'm learning is this: there's a difference between someone's potential and their present character.
Potential is what they could become. Present character is who they consistently show you they are right now.
And one of the most painful mistakes we make as people is falling in love with the potential while ignoring the character.
We see the blueprint. God sees the builder.
Somebody can have all the potential in the world (talent, charm, vision, even good intentions) but if their present character doesn't match, you're not in a relationship with what they could be. You're in a relationship with a version of them you built in your own mind.
And that version? That version will disappoint you every time. Not because they're evil. But because you held them accountable to a person they haven't become yet.
Watch patterns, not promises.
Watch how they treat people who can't do anything for them.
Watch what they do when they're tired, stressed, or exposed.
Watch whether their apology comes with change or just words.
Potential is God's territory. Character is your responsibility to discern.
Pray for people. Believe in people. But BELIEVE THEM when they show you who they are.
Because potential without character is just a promise with no collateral.
And love (real love, real friendship, real partnership) requires collateral.
Anyway… the light's green. 🚦
